The core requirement is a minimum of two years of full-time work experience in cash management, treasury, or a corporate finance-related role. Internships, holiday jobs, and volunteer work don't count,AFP wants real, career-based experience. You can apply and sit for the exam before you've fully met all requirements, but you won't be awarded the credential until everything is satisfied.
You need to read, study, and focus on solving questions for around 1 to 2 hours per day, for roughly 5 to 6 months. That's the formula, and notice what it isn't: it isn't 10 hours on a weekend followed by two weeks of nothing. The exam rewards consistent perseverance, not heroic bursts. Treasury knowledge compounds like interest, small daily deposits, never withdrawn.
The CTP exam contains 170 questions but only 150 of them are scored. The other 20 are unscored pretest items that AFP uses to gather statistics for future exams. Your raw score is transformed into a scaled score (ranging from 200 to 500), and the passing score is 300. There is no penalty for wrong answers,AFP encourages you to answer every question, so never leave a blank.

No, membership is not a precondition. But here's the practical math: non-members pay a higher exam fee, and that difference, the non-member differential, gets applied toward an AFP membership for the calendar year. So in effect, you end up a member anyway. The membership pays for itself in resources and community.
Yes, there is no limit on how many times you can retake the exam. You submit AFP's Re-Registration Form with a $250 fee for an upcoming testing window. Your original registration stays valid for three years or six testing windows. Mina offers free re-attendance of his course for any student who registers to retake the exam.
It matters more than people think, schedule early in the window. If you book your exam in the final week and a work emergency or family matter forces a cancellation, there may be no seats left to reschedule into. Book early in the window; if something goes wrong, you have room to maneuver. Deferrals exist, but AFP grants them only for genuine special circumstances.
Three years. Then the cycle resets. AFP requires every CTP to earn and report 36 continuing education credits every three years. That's 12 a year on average, entirely manageable for anyone active in this profession. Webinars, conferences, training sessions, and teaching (which earns credits at double the rate) all count.
Yes, and this surprises many of my students. AFP requires the experience to be in the corporate finance profession broadly; it does not have to be specifically in treasury or cash management. FP&A, banking-side corporate finance, controllership with finance exposure, these can qualify. Treasury is a destination; AFP recognizes there are many roads into it.
About five weeks after passing, AFP's certificate vendor (The Award Group) emails you to verify your mailing address and confirm the details on your certificate. After you confirm, the certificate ships within roughly 6–8 weeks, and you'll get an email when it's on its way. Please respond to that email, if you don't, AFP will simply ship to whatever address is in your profile.
